These misconceptions have contributed to stigma, discrimination, and silence, making it difficult for many individuals to live openly and safely. Challenging these myths is an important step toward building a more informed, respectful, and humane society. One common misconception is that LGBTQ identities are “un-African” or foreign. However, historical and anthropological evidence shows that diverse expressions of gender and sexuality have existed in many African communities long before colonial influence. The idea that LGBTQ identities are imported overlooks this complexity and reduces African culture to a single narrative that does not reflect historical reality.
